Chapter 1

What is it about golf? What is this ridiculous game where people hit a small tiny ball with a stick around six miles of ground? People who don’t play golf often wonder why so many people play so frequently and why it is so enjoyable to them. Golf is more than a game. It’s a reflection of who we are as human beings, how we interact with each other, and a measure of character. Gold is also a reflection of life and the ups and down of the breaks, opportunities, and bad luck. A well-struck tee shot at the ninth hole at Cordevalle in San Martin, California will most of the time invariably end up in the ditch that cuts the center of the fairway just like a knife. The same shot on virtually any other golf hole will produce a short iron to the green. Golf, like life, is a big challenge where all the practice in the world is not necessarily a key to success–but without it, you simply cannot excel….

What people are saying

“The book is a fast read. I am an amateur golfer, Mr Bronson’s experiences felt real as if I were there on courses I would likely never play. The book doesn’t try to correct your golf game, it highlights the value of the experience, such as playing Pebble Beach with Arnold Palmer; a spectator at the Masters in Augusta Georgia. Some stories were very positive and maybe something I would like to try; others with “snooty” staff would be avoided.”
–Jack Cook

“Joseph Bronson provides golfers and fans of the game a bird’s eye view of many beautiful golf courses throughout our country and around the globe. As an amateur golfer and traveler, he offers a fascinating manner in which he brings to the foreground the variety of cultural experiences he has gained while playing the game for which he is so passionate. In Golf Chronicles, the author engages the reader and broadens their understanding by detailing how international cultures translate into the service and etiquette of a round of golf. He personalizes his adventures by incorporating vignettes relating to lessons learned through the game of golf and his relationships with family, friends, and those who share a love of the game.”
–Kathleen Bowers

“I could never understand the allure of golf. Now, I know. Joe’s journey from novice golfer to low handicap was a fascinating microcosm of dedication to craft. The courses are described in detail to the point where you could visualize the author (or the reader) playing on those courses. And the pro shop personnel, all different, unlike what you would get when playing on a tennis court. Lastly, I liked the technical descriptions of the golf clubs- I will never feel guilty about buying a new bike again…”
–Laura Oliphant

“Interesting and very well written. It’s an excellent overview for the many courses that are referenced throughout the world from a golfer’s perspective. Thoroughly enjoyable read.”
–Ron M.

“Joe does a remarkable job depicting the perspective of the amateur golfer who loves (and lives) the game. A very good read!”
–Robert A. Gerard
