Chapter 1
The game of golf continues to face significant issues despite favorable US economic conditions. A big problem is the inversion of the fee structure for the private golf club in the United States. It used to be a major investment for a family to place a substantial fee to enter the club and obtain an equity position in the club. Monthly dues and meals costs were very affordable and reasonable, so once the fee was paid, there were no issues for the family budget to be able to cover the monthly cost of dues and meals. Clubs use the monthly dues to cover the costs of maintaining the golf course and the facilities to the standard that persuaded the member/investor to join that particular club. Other significant matters for the family budget were the cost of education, especially private education, and the costs of housing. The cost of housing has now skyrocketed to the point where in some instances; the mortgage payment might be as much as 50% of the total family budget. These costs accelerated far faster than inflation and now the monthly dues for the country club have also tripled (for a private club on the West Coast over a fifteen-year period). The dues revenue from the member hardly covers the cost of maintenance the golf course and the facility, which requires the club to seek tournament play to generate revenue….

What people are saying
“Reading Joe Bronson on golf is akin to hearing an intelligent, quirky man’s love song; sometimes plaintive but always full of the love of the game. The honesty and unexpected clarity of his opinions is refreshing. You won’t often guess where he is coming from, but once he has stated it you are not in doubt about his opinion. Buy this book; it is a fun read.”
–Mike Nichols
“If you are an avid golfer, this is the book for you. Joe’s passion for the game oozes out of pages (or screen if you are digital). He has played some of the world’s best golf courses and provides a thorough review of some of the greatest holes in the world. His anecdotes from playing over 40 years are entertaining.”
–Craig Pintens
“Another great book! Great info on pebble, bandon, and other resorts. Very candid and refreshing takes on many issues, topics, and courses. Written for the everyday golf enthusiast! If you enjoyed his first book, golf chronicles, then you will enjoy this book as well, as it has a similar flow and format.”
–Ryan Stimson
“Joe has created another great read on the game of golf. “Through the Green” is part golf travelogue and part journey into the nooks and crannies of the game – all as seen through the “eagle” eyes of an unapologetic golf addict. There is something here for everyone, with disarming and authentic candor on golf’s highs and lows. The juxtaposition of Joe’s personal best and worst of golf holes with a chapter dedicated to the state of mind and proper technique involved in the heaving of a 4-iron are just a few of the treats that await the reader. Great job, Joe and keep these books coming!”
