Tournament of Champions-Kapalua, Plantation Course

by | Jan 7, 2017

The PGA Tour starts its season at the Tournament of Champions at the Plantation Course on the Island of Maui in Hawaii.  The Plantation Course is a par 73, 7,400 yard venue.  Yardage matters little to the touring professional as some drives today were over 350 yards.  Justin Thomas, who some pundits believe is the second coming of Jordan Speith, shot 67 for the third consecutive day taking a two shot lead into Sunday.  He will tee it up with Hideki Matsuyama.  A number of players including Jimmy Walker, Ryan Moore, Patrick Reed will chase the leaders.  I predict that some one will come out of the pack to win this event.  Thomas drove the ball incredibly today and, with a few more putts, could have gone even lower.  I’ve played Plantation many times and its a thoroughly enjoyable experience including the 611 par 5 18th hole.  While the pros are going for it in 2, I’m lucky to get on in 3.  No eagles on the hole this week.  The 560 yard par 4-17th is another treat with a significant downhill incline as most of the pros are hitting 320 yard drives there.
